SODA at Boise Pride, 2005

The following is a brief account of SODA's first ever Pride Festival, as recorded by Andrea and Lisa.

First things first. We landed a canopy from Kathy and Tabitha (Eclectica and Safari Pearl owners, respectively) and immediately set about affixing our brand new banner to it. With a borrowed length of rope, nothing could hold Lisa, our star banner wrangler, back.

And I applauded her efforts accordingly.

Open for business.

Can we interest you in a fine legal education?

On-the-scene journal entry: 11:16. Got rocks and propaganda set up, now just waiting for the festivities. The wind is blowing, but our cement [rocks are] keeping everything pretty much in check. Bonnie the Plummer just stopped by; she's starting her own [pluming] business and is distributing home-made cards. She was followed by Jackie, the co-chair of Pride this year; if we need anything, we know where to go. Our table is pretty small, but it's ours. We're T-minus 30 minutes to go til the rally at the [statehouse]. A male-to-female transgendered person just came by to advise us to leave someone here to keep our material tied down; we referred her to the cement blocks.

11:45. Thought for next year: bring drag queens dressed as historical legal figures (like Mrs. Palsgraph). Random observation: we're freezing under the shaded canopy in windy conditions and kids are swimming in the fountain in their underthings; something's not right.

11:50. First "George W. Bush, You're Fired" Human Rights Campaign stickers taken, spotted by 8 to 10-year old girl and shared with Mom. Note: tell Westlaw to give us points for getting their name out in forms of pens on the table and lent to neighboring canopy.

11:52. Lisa makes restroom break.

11:55. Nicole LeFavour spotted booking it across the plaza.

Back at the ranch.

1:24. Back at the booth with lunch and it's packed. (To avoid any confusion on the author's perception of 'packed,' this statement is not accurately reflected in the following pictures.)

3-ish. Cleaned up at The Community Center book sale; have the beginnings of a library for the SODA office.

The Festival

Every type of gay person attends every Pride festival, no matter the venue; the hippies without haircuts haircuts or mainstream deodorant, the baby-dykes who carefully construct their appearance to give the impression that they couldn't care less about anything...least of all how they look, the goth gays and pale female companions who dabble in the lesbian arts, the over 50 gals with jeans hiked up to their arm-pits and long-sleeved button-down shirts, the formerly-married gay men who spend equal time in the gym and their flowerbeds. It's always a great time.

Thanks for everything, Boise Pride! See you next year!

Next stop, Moscow...
